SUMMARY:Workshop: Baskets on a Crazy Quilt
DESCRIPTION:Within perfectly squared up blocks are the patches as individually shaped as they were in antique quilts. Make a crazy quilt with a fool proof method\, without using foundation fabric and minimum waste of fabrics. A beginner friendly block which can be useful for art quilters and intermediate quilters for many other applications with endless possibilities\, including as a base for improv baskets. \n\n\n\nHow can you make a crazy quilt crazier? Add a few scrappy baskets on top of it!  \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, early on the focus will be on fabric selection and design development. You will go through the exercise to find balance with textures and colors of small to large scale prints. Working with solids\, the emphasis will be on value and contrast. You will learn to make crazy patch background with freeform blocks and string pieced baskets and their handles. Not interested in baskets? Try bowls\, vases or something else. This workshop is a place to learn about scale\, contrast\, value\, and selecting just the right fabric to brighten up the space. \n\n\n\nTechnique – Machine Pieced\, Improv Piecing \n\n\n\nSkill Level – Experienced Beginner \n\n\n\n\n\nSupply List \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n$25 Members / $35 Non-members \n\n\n\nTo sign up\, contact Lisa Johnson at lisajohnson@gt.rr.com

SUMMARY:Lecture: Teresa Duryea Wong
DESCRIPTION:The Calling of Quilt Collectors \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat makes a quilt collectable? How significant is it to the quilt-maker\, to the history of quilting\, and to the value of a quilt\, to have work considered collectable? \n\n\n\nThis lecture will explore the collections of a number of major antique quilt collectors and will delve into their vision of the importance of\, and responsibility for\, preserving this work. \n\n\n\nQuilt collectors play a critical role in the circle of life of art. When museums and collectors purchase a quilt\, the work of the artist is immediately validated\, and the quilt obtains a monetary value that didn’t exist before. The collector also has a critical role in preserving quilts\, and ideally\, presenting them to viewers\, either by hanging it in their home\, or loaning it for exhibitions. This lecture will explore the collections of major antique quilt collectors such as Joanna Rose\, Eli Leon\, and Robert & Ardis James — and why their vision and passion are so important to quilt preservation. In addition\, you’ll be introduced to the collections of contemporary quilt collectors\, Robert & Helen Cargo\, Frank Klein\, Jack Walsh\, and Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi. Hear the stories of how these collectors came to own hundreds\, even thousands of quilts\, and learn how their passion kept them hunting for more. Teresa will also bring a trunk show featuring part of her antique quilt collection\, plus antique quilt tops she has collected and finished on her longarm machine. \n\n\n\nAbout Teresa \n\n\n\nA talented quilter in her own right\, Teresa is also an excellent researcher and author. Her five authoritative books cover various aspects of quilting\, from the history of cotton and indigo from Japan\, and modern quilting in Japan\, through the story of cotton growing in America and the history of the Houston Quilt Festival\, to the history of native American quilting. Her work is always impeccably researched and engagingly presented. A member of the Board of   Directors of the International Quilt Museum. Teresa’s knowledge of all things quilt is widely recognized.

I thank God for my husband\, children\, and grandchildren as well as the people who have given me the opportunity to serve them.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Janice Schindeler
DESCRIPTION:Inspirational Sources / Take a Look Around! We will explore where inspiration comes from. Shapes and sizes and color combos with a few funny stories along the way and numerous quilts to be shared. \n\n\n\nBIOJanice SchindelerSecond only to her love for her small family\, quilting and food are Janice’s two passions. She has worked as a food journalist\, restaurant critic\, waitress and a cook. She owned a catering company and recently retired from her pimento cheese farmers market business. She was once crowned Apple Pie Baking Princess\, was called the Hamburger Queen\, and is known around town as the Pimento Cheese Goddess. She has been quilting since 1995. Always a bit out of the box\, Janice learned the American tradition of quilting while living in Australia. \n\n\n\nThen a move to the UK afforded her the opportunity to take the esteemed City & Guilds quilting course\, where classic fundamental techniques were emphasized. With her roots in traditional quilting\, Janice quickly applied the classic techniques to her own creations. She went off in two – maybe three tangents – food\, story and felted wool applique quilts. Her wool and embellished quilt entitled “Home” earned a Ribbon of Merit for Surface Design and Embellishments from the National Quilt Association. \n\n\n\nShe has lectured and taught wool applique and embellishments and ice dyeing for the past 5 years. In 2019 she attended the National Quilting Symposium in Auckland\, New Zealand where she took a 6-day Indigo dyeing class from Jane Callander. Always anxious to learn\, most recently Janice enrolled in a 5-month modern quilting class with Maria Shell.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Susan Cornell
DESCRIPTION:What is an Art Quilt anyway? \n\n\n\nWe all hear the term\, but do we all have the same idea of what an “art quilt” is? Is it a relatively new thing? Are there better terms? Do you have to be a traditional artist to make one? Where can we see some? These are some of the questions that will be covered in this talk\, with a show-and-tell of quilts and images to help us decide on answers.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Linda Neal
DESCRIPTION:Lecture – Trunk Show \n\n\n\nLinda will share some of her favorite quilts- primarily applique with added embellishment- from years of quilting. When describing her quilts she often says “I don’t do easy\,” and “the original pattern had… but I did…” She’s won awards at AQS Paducah and Houston IQA\, as well as her local Quilt Plano and Dallas Quilt Show\, and other National shows.  \n\n\n\nhttp://www.quiltagiousquarters.com/linda-neal-bio.htm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBioLinda Neal is an award- winning quilter who lives in McKinney\, Texas with her husband Robert. She began quilting 17 years ago after retiring from pediatric/neo-natal nursing. She has won awards from: AQS Paducah and Phoenix\, Houston IQA\, Pacific International Quilt Festival\, Shipshewana Quilt Festival\, Quilt Odyssey\, Road to California\, Quilt Plano\, and the Dallas Quilt Show. \n\n\n\nLinda’s winning quilts are primarily applique with added embellishment. She often makes changes to the published pattern to add personalization and visual impact. Her goal with each quilt is to make each block in the quilt her favorite. She challenges viewers to search for the added embellishment and detail in each block. Her motto “I can’t do easy\,” shows in every quilt. \n\n\n\nLinda enjoys sharing her applique knowledge with students. Her class includes lots of hands-on demonstrations and examples. Even the most advanced students will learn some new tricks! Linda is able to teach beginners how to applique\, assist with a project in process\, or help you through an applique problem.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Let’s be Friends
DESCRIPTION:Bring a smile\, a kind word\, a happy face and you will enjoy the day much more! Cameras are welcome in all my classes. Show and tell of other projects done in my classes are always a treat. Basic supplies that make you happy during class are things you can bring. If you like a chair\, bring it\, but if you can’t\, then understand the one you get to use in class is one you didn’t have to lug. This goes for lots of other things\, too. \n\n\n\nMysteries are so much fun\, but so is learning how color works and how different units go together. This New class will have all that! \n\n\n\nEach student brings 2 1/2″ strips that will be exchanged. With a group of 20 or more there will be SO much to work with!Depending on skill level and how fast you sew\, you could actually finish a top in class. Amazing what can happen in a day. \n\n\n\nUsing only Batik fabric\, we will start with a strip exchange. This will give us a lot of different fabrics/colors to work with. This is my example of a saturated batik fabric. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n**Batik fabrics are mostly sold at Quilt shops. They are dyed and most of them have no wrong side. When purchasing this fabric for class\, remember that you will also be getting fabrics from others and it would be nice if each of you gave your favorite color! \n\n\n\nSupply list \n\n\n\nMatruler to use with rotary cutterrotary cutter with a new bladetriangle tool such as Easy Angle (available for purchase in class if you don’t have it)Tri-Rec tool (available for purchase in class if you don’t have it)sewing machine with all the cordsseam ripper1/4″ footsnips to cut threadgray or other neutral color threadmost of all a Happy Face!2 yards of (1) Batik fabric FABRIC A2 yards of a saturated color Batik FABRIC B 3 yards of background fabric. This can be a white on white\, plain white\, off white\, black or a solid fabric that you want to use as a background. (This doesn’t have to be batik fabric) FABRIC C \n\n\n\nBefore class you need to cut \n\n\n\nFabric A; Cut (25) 2 1/2″ strips (or number of students in class) these will be used for the exchange. **2 yards will be enough to cut 25 stripsFabric B; Cut (11) 4 1/2″ strips then use (6) of these strips to cut (48) 4 1/2″ squaresFabric C; Cut (11) 2 1/2″ strips\, (4) 4 1/2″ strips and (12) 12 1/2″ squares. SUMMARY:Lecture: Charlotte Angotti
DESCRIPTION:Lecture \n\n\n\nWhy aren’t you making more quilts? I know you have the fabric! \n\n\n\nThis lecture is humorous\, light\, yet full of information and real quilts.  No slides or Powerpoint – the lights are up and the ideas are flowing.  This is a great way to get an overview of what quilting is all about.  Questions are always welcome.  Bring friends\, cameras\, and be ready to laugh! \n\n\n\nhttps://www.quiltmakersstudio.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nWhile shopping with her mother in 1977\, (really\, that long ago!)\, Charlotte wandered into a quilt shop and everything changed from there. Educated in fine arts\, speech and drama\, she brings a variety of talents to the class and in a most humorous way. \n\n\n\nShe has been teaching quilt making since 1978 because someone asked Charlotte to teach her. Her first quilt was sold right after making it. She has sold many since. In 1981 Charlotte opened a quilt shop\, Quilt Works\, in Virginia Beach\, VA. She sold the shop in 1999. \n\n\n\nShe has been teaching nationally/internationally since 1991 and now lives in the Lafayette\, LA area\, moving there in 2016. \n\n\n\nQuilt Maker’s Studio was started when Charlotte realized there were a few left-over kits now and then. The ‘orphan’ kits are sometimes available on the website\, but more often offered for sale in other classes as she travels. The kits are so popular it is difficult to get them online before they are sold! The kits are laser cut and go together perfectly. They make sewing a quilt simply as good as it gets. \n\n\n\nIt has been said many times\, if you hear laughter coming from a room\, there is a good chance Charlotte Is in there. Charlotte is known for humor\, her way with color and fabric\, her pre-cut kits\, and her book\, Surprise Yourself! Charlotte is a fun person to have on a faculty or as a teacher coming to your guild. She believes her hobby is quiltmaking and her job is teaching others to enjoy it as much as she does.
