SUMMARY:Lecture: Candace Hassen
DESCRIPTION:Christ Covenant Church 6390 North Major Drive\, Beaumont\, TX\, United States \n\n\n\n\n\nBy Candace Hassen: \n\n\n\n\n\nI have been fascinated by yarn and fabric since I was 6 years old. As I was growing up\, I tried every kind of needlework I could get my hands on. It was natural that I ended up in the textile department in college. For decades\, I wove room sized rugs for Lyn Sterling Montagne\, who made custom rugs for interior designers. During this time I wove scarves\, blankets and tableware on my own time. 25 years ago I took up quilting\, and immediately fell in love. I have since realized how much being a weaver for decades has had an effect on my quilting. Both weaving and quilting rely on color interplay and repeated geometric design. Color has always been one of my favorite things\, and years of hand dying yarn has given me an extensive foundation in working with color. \n\n\n\nCurrently\, I design quilts\, and publish patterns from them. I love scrap quilts-the more fabrics and colors-the better. I enjoy working with traditional fabrics and blocks\, as well as contemporary fabrics and approaches. I like to explore design ideas from a variety of places such as\, nature\, other textiles and art forms. \n\n\n\nI have a Bachelor’s degree in Art. \n\n\n\nI am very proud to have been named the Quilter Laureate of Porterdale\, Georgia\, where I currently live. I can’t believe I am lucky enough to live in a town that wanted to have a Quilter Laureate\, much less to get to BE that Quilter Laureate. \n\n\n\nI love to share my designs by presenting guild programs\, teaching\, and making custom quilts. I love to travel around the country\, and meet other quilters\, and share my designs and tips with them. \n\n\n\nYou can view my work at: \n\n\n\nquiltdesignsbycandace.cometsy.com/shop/quiltdesignsbycandacquiltdesignsbycandace.blogspot.comInstagram.com/quilts_by_candace \n\n\n\n/

SUMMARY:Lecture: Pat Bishop
DESCRIPTION:Christ Covenant Church 6390 North Major Drive\, Beaumont\, TX\, United States \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Pat Bishop: \n\n\n\nSince I was a small child\, I’ve loved making things.  Art has always been my favorite subject since kindergarten\, through high school and beyond.  I’ve sewn and done needlework since I was about 10 years old. \n\n\n\nI was seriously into rosemaling\, Norwegian stylized painting early on in my artistic exploration\, followed by watercolor painting which I continued to do occasionally. \n\n\n\nI spent many years making traditional quilts when my children were young and eventually moved on to art quilting and experimenting with fabric manipulation to support the materials needed in my art quilts. \n\n\n\nAlthough I am mostly a self taught artist I have had numerous teachers through many workshops and classes who have helped me along the way.  In 2007 I had two of my art quilts juried into the International Quilt Festival in Houston\, where they both won awards.  It was there that I discovered Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA.COM)\, an international group of artists who focused on textiles. In 2012 I became a Juried Artist Member of SAQA and am currently a co-rep for the Wisconsin/Illinois region.  My artwork has exhibited throughout the world and won awards in numerous venues.  I have assisted in curating several art quilt exhibits for SAQA and other organizations. In the last few years I have expanded my work to include watercolors on fabric as well as paper and acrylic painting on fabric as well.  I exhibit and sell my work in fine art exhibits\, and I lecture and teach my technique and style.  I want to help others realize their desires to create their personal art as well as pursuing my artistic journey. \n\n\n\nI live in Shawano\, Wisconsin and work out of my home studio.

SUMMARY:Simply Abstract Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Christ Covenant Church 6390 North Major Drive\, Beaumont\, TX\, United States \n\n\n\n\n\nThis is the same process used for the background of Ragged and Real. We build a landscape just with strips and leave it at that. Sunsets\, fields\, water views. It is almost too easy\, yet so satisfying. We’ll talk about what abstract is and how to think abstractly and about the compositional components of a successful design. Expand your creativity with no quilting rules or rulers. It will be easy! The landscape is built with strips of fabric collaged and fused to a background\, then straight stich quilted. No free motion involved. Machine required. Finishing options will be discussed. Beginners welcome. \n\n\n\nSupply List \n\n\n\nTo sign up\, contact Julie Reid at julie@thestitchinshed.com \n\n\n\nCost is $25 for members; $35 for non-members.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Bethanne Nemesh - My Lifetime as a Quilter
DESCRIPTION:Christ Covenant Church 6390 North Major Drive\, Beaumont\, TX\, United States \n\n\n\nBethanne Nemesh began her quilting journey more than 27 years ago\, in college.  A professor helped her see that she didn’t have to tolerate the “boring” calicos of the era.  She could go out and dye or manipulate her materials to match her vision…which allowed her to think of quilts as more than the family heirlooms she had grown up with.  Then\, batik fabric arrived on the scene and she was completely hooked. \n\n\n\nBethanne began her longarm machine sewing business in 2008 with the purchase of an A-1 brand machine.  Her innovative approach creating secondary designs\, in generally traditional quilts\, as well as unique free-hand quilting patterns\, quickly earned her a thriving quilt-for-hire business.  However\, sharing her work on-line\, and sharing her personal quilts on the national show circuit\, changed her business forever.  Her true love is in teaching others to quilt.  Bethanne loves interacting with her students.  Her favorite classes to teach are actually practical ones.  She firmly believes in each student having a strong grasp of foundation quilting skills\, and if they choose to quilt for hire\, a firm understanding of the link between style\, and time spent quilting\, and how that relates to their personal business model.  She loves encouraging her students to express themselves uniquely in their art\, ignore the trends of the quilt world\, and find their own creative path. \n\n\n\nHer quilts are deeply personal to her\, expressing a story in cloth.  Her pictographic show quilts feature a completely original collage of flora and fauna\, depicting individual ecosystems\, layered with meaning.  Her contemporary whole cloth quilts feature a unique intertwined and interlocked style\, melding traditional elements with the fantastic.  Her yarn couched pieces are more for fun and exploration of a new media\, but one that she finds a great deal of pleasure in. Her more modern quilts express emotion through free motion quilting and blended quilt texture.

SUMMARY:Lynn Carson Harris: Precision Piecing and Trunk Show
DESCRIPTION:Christ Covenant Church\, 6390 North Major Drive\, Beaumont\, TX 77713 \n\n\n\nI create textile art with the traditional techniques past generations of my family used to make practical\, everyday items such as clothes and quilts. I connect the past to the present and honor the beauty and artistry of the handmade. While all of my pieces are original designs\, I turn to the geometric patterns of antique quilts for inspiration. My art often evolves dramatically from the start to finish of a piece\, and I find as much pleasure in the process as in the completed pieces.  My most recent work is a series of small-scale abstract designs inspired by the doll-house items my sisters and I made when I was younger. I enjoy playing with color and especially watching the original layouts shrink as they are sewn together. I love all things tiny and feel I am reaching the limits of how small one can go in making a quilt using traditional methods.
