SUMMARY:Lecture: Teresa Duryea Wong
DESCRIPTION:The Calling of Quilt Collectors \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat makes a quilt collectable? How significant is it to the quilt-maker\, to the history of quilting\, and to the value of a quilt\, to have work considered collectable? \n\n\n\nThis lecture will explore the collections of a number of major antique quilt collectors and will delve into their vision of the importance of\, and responsibility for\, preserving this work. \n\n\n\nQuilt collectors play a critical role in the circle of life of art. When museums and collectors purchase a quilt\, the work of the artist is immediately validated\, and the quilt obtains a monetary value that didn’t exist before. The collector also has a critical role in preserving quilts\, and ideally\, presenting them to viewers\, either by hanging it in their home\, or loaning it for exhibitions. This lecture will explore the collections of major antique quilt collectors such as Joanna Rose\, Eli Leon\, and Robert & Ardis James — and why their vision and passion are so important to quilt preservation. In addition\, you’ll be introduced to the collections of contemporary quilt collectors\, Robert & Helen Cargo\, Frank Klein\, Jack Walsh\, and Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi. Hear the stories of how these collectors came to own hundreds\, even thousands of quilts\, and learn how their passion kept them hunting for more. Teresa will also bring a trunk show featuring part of her antique quilt collection\, plus antique quilt tops she has collected and finished on her longarm machine. \n\n\n\nAbout Teresa \n\n\n\nA talented quilter in her own right\, Teresa is also an excellent researcher and author. Her five authoritative books cover various aspects of quilting\, from the history of cotton and indigo from Japan\, and modern quilting in Japan\, through the story of cotton growing in America and the history of the Houston Quilt Festival\, to the history of native American quilting. Her work is always impeccably researched and engagingly presented. A member of the Board of   Directors of the International Quilt Museum. Teresa’s knowledge of all things quilt is widely recognized.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Candace Hassen
DESCRIPTION:Christ Covenant Church 6390 North Major Drive\, Beaumont\, TX\, United States \n\n\n\n\n\nBy Candace Hassen: \n\n\n\n\n\nI have been fascinated by yarn and fabric since I was 6 years old. As I was growing up\, I tried every kind of needlework I could get my hands on. It was natural that I ended up in the textile department in college. For decades\, I wove room sized rugs for Lyn Sterling Montagne\, who made custom rugs for interior designers. During this time I wove scarves\, blankets and tableware on my own time. 25 years ago I took up quilting\, and immediately fell in love. I have since realized how much being a weaver for decades has had an effect on my quilting. Both weaving and quilting rely on color interplay and repeated geometric design. Color has always been one of my favorite things\, and years of hand dying yarn has given me an extensive foundation in working with color. \n\n\n\nCurrently\, I design quilts\, and publish patterns from them. I love scrap quilts-the more fabrics and colors-the better. I enjoy working with traditional fabrics and blocks\, as well as contemporary fabrics and approaches. I like to explore design ideas from a variety of places such as\, nature\, other textiles and art forms. \n\n\n\nI have a Bachelor’s degree in Art. \n\n\n\nI am very proud to have been named the Quilter Laureate of Porterdale\, Georgia\, where I currently live. I can’t believe I am lucky enough to live in a town that wanted to have a Quilter Laureate\, much less to get to BE that Quilter Laureate. \n\n\n\nI love to share my designs by presenting guild programs\, teaching\, and making custom quilts. I love to travel around the country\, and meet other quilters\, and share my designs and tips with them. \n\n\n\nYou can view my work at: \n\n\n\nquiltdesignsbycandace.cometsy.com/shop/quiltdesignsbycandacquiltdesignsbycandace.blogspot.comInstagram.com/quilts_by_candace \n\n\n\n/

SUMMARY:Lecture: Pat Bishop
DESCRIPTION:Christ Covenant Church 6390 North Major Drive\, Beaumont\, TX\, United States \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Pat Bishop: \n\n\n\nSince I was a small child\, I’ve loved making things.  Art has always been my favorite subject since kindergarten\, through high school and beyond.  I’ve sewn and done needlework since I was about 10 years old. \n\n\n\nI was seriously into rosemaling\, Norwegian stylized painting early on in my artistic exploration\, followed by watercolor painting which I continued to do occasionally. \n\n\n\nI spent many years making traditional quilts when my children were young and eventually moved on to art quilting and experimenting with fabric manipulation to support the materials needed in my art quilts. \n\n\n\nAlthough I am mostly a self taught artist I have had numerous teachers through many workshops and classes who have helped me along the way.  In 2007 I had two of my art quilts juried into the International Quilt Festival in Houston\, where they both won awards.  It was there that I discovered Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA.COM)\, an international group of artists who focused on textiles. In 2012 I became a Juried Artist Member of SAQA and am currently a co-rep for the Wisconsin/Illinois region.  My artwork has exhibited throughout the world and won awards in numerous venues.  I have assisted in curating several art quilt exhibits for SAQA and other organizations. In the last few years I have expanded my work to include watercolors on fabric as well as paper and acrylic painting on fabric as well.  I exhibit and sell my work in fine art exhibits\, and I lecture and teach my technique and style.  I want to help others realize their desires to create their personal art as well as pursuing my artistic journey. \n\n\n\nI live in Shawano\, Wisconsin and work out of my home studio.

SUMMARY:Simply Abstract Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Christ Covenant Church 6390 North Major Drive\, Beaumont\, TX\, United States \n\n\n\n\n\nThis is the same process used for the background of Ragged and Real. We build a landscape just with strips and leave it at that. Sunsets\, fields\, water views. It is almost too easy\, yet so satisfying. We’ll talk about what abstract is and how to think abstractly and about the compositional components of a successful design. Expand your creativity with no quilting rules or rulers. It will be easy! The landscape is built with strips of fabric collaged and fused to a background\, then straight stich quilted. No free motion involved. Machine required. Finishing options will be discussed. Beginners welcome. \n\n\n\nSupply List \n\n\n\nTo sign up\, contact Julie Reid at julie@thestitchinshed.com \n\n\n\nCost is $25 for members; $35 for non-members.
